Moving house regularly ranks among life’s most stressful experiences, sitting somewhere alongside changing jobs and planning a wedding. It is not hard to see why. There is the packing, the logistics, the endless lists, the boxes that multiply overnight and the unshakeable feeling that you have forgotten something important. Add children, pets or a tight settlement date, and the pressure builds quickly.
But moving does not have to be chaotic. With a clear plan and a bit of flexibility, it can be surprisingly manageable. Many people now use mobile storage to take the pressure off, packing at their own pace into a container delivered to their door, then having it moved or stored until the new place is ready.
Start earlier than you think
The biggest mistake people make is leaving everything until the last couple of weeks. Begin planning as soon as you know your moving date.
Create a moving checklist with tasks broken down by week. Include booking removalists or storage, arranging utilities, updating your address, organising school transfers and planning cleaning.
Declutter ruthlessly
Moving is the perfect opportunity to let go of things you no longer need. The less you move, the less you have to pack, carry and unpack.
Work through each room and sort items into keep, donate, sell and discard piles. Be honest about what you actually use. Clothes you have not worn in years, duplicate kitchen gadgets and forgotten boxes in the garage can all go.
Selling items online or holding a garage sale can help offset moving costs.
Gather supplies
You will need more boxes than you expect. Collect sturdy boxes in a range of sizes, along with packing tape, bubble wrap, butcher’s paper, markers and furniture blankets.
Specialty boxes, such as wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes or dish packs for fragile kitchenware, can make packing easier and protect belongings.
Pack room by room
Packing one room at a time keeps things organised. Start with rooms and items you use least, such as spare bedrooms, storage areas and seasonal belongings.
Label every box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs in. Some people use colour-coded labels for each room, which makes unloading much faster.
Pack heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in larger ones. Fill gaps with paper or towels to prevent items shifting.
Prepare an essentials box
Pack a box or bag with items you will need on moving day and the first night in your new home. Include toiletries, medications, phone chargers, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, snacks, toilet paper, important documents and children’s favourite toys.
Keep this box with you rather than loading it onto the truck.
Handle the admin
Moving involves plenty of paperwork. Arrange connection of electricity, gas, internet and water at your new address, and disconnection or transfer at your old one.
Update your address with banks, employers, insurers, schools, doctors, government agencies and subscription services. Consider mail redirection for a few months to catch anything you miss.
Plan moving day
Confirm bookings with removalists or storage providers a few days before the move. Make sure there is clear access and parking at both properties.
Keep children and pets safe and out of the way, perhaps with a friend or family member. Do a final walkthrough of your old home to check cupboards, drawers and outdoor areas.
Use flexible options
Settlement dates do not always line up neatly. If there is a gap between leaving your old home and moving into the new one, flexible storage can bridge the gap.
Container storage, self-storage units and removalist storage services offer different levels of convenience and cost. Choose an option that suits your timeline and budget.
Settle in gradually
You do not need to unpack everything on the first day. Focus on essentials first: beds, bathroom items, kitchen basics and anything the children need to feel comfortable.
Unpack one room at a time and take breaks. Get to know your new neighbourhood with walks and visits to local shops and parks.

A fresh start
Moving can be tiring, but it is also an exciting new chapter. With careful planning, a little help and a willingness to let go of what you no longer need, you can make the process far less stressful and start enjoying your new home sooner.
